It is comprised of just over 1.6 million residents living in a land area of about 23 square miles, making it part of the most densely population county in the United States. Manhattan also makes up one of the nation’s wealthiest counties, with a average personal per capita income of over $100,000. The district serves as a major commercial, financial, and cultural focal point of not only the United States, but also the world. Many media companies are also based in Manhattan. Other famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities, as well as the headquarters of the United Nations and the New York Stock Exchange are also located in the area.

Manhattan is also made up of many smaller neighborhoods most of which gained names for their geographical location, or some that are acronyms such as NoLita, which is short for “NOrth of Little ITAly,” or SoHo, which is short for “SOuth of HOuston.” However, each neighborhood has its own focus or character, such as SoHo, which is primarily a commercial center with upscale shopping. Chelsea is a district known well for its numerous art galleries and cultural events; over 200 art galleries are located in the area. Broadway theatre is also established in the area, as well as the Lincoln Center, which is home to one of the world’s most famous opera houses. The area is also home to numerous sports teams, such as the NBA’s New York Knicks, WNBA’s New York Liberty, and NHL’s New York Rangers, who all play their home games at Madison Square Garden.
